McDonald
Wins First Career Empire Super Sprint Main at Mohawk International Raceway,
Poirier Crowned 25th Anniversary Champion
NATHAN DELORMIER WINS SEMI PRO/STREET STOCK RUN-WHAT-YA-BRUNG AT MOHAWK
INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY
September
20, 2008 - HOGANSBURG, N.Y. ? A few weeks back Brian McDonald was
leading a 358-modified race at Mohawk International Speedway when mechanical
problems caused him to be involved in a big wreck on the front straightaway.
On Saturday night, McDonald returned with his sprint car and went on to
win his first ever 25th Anniversary tour Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprint
A-Main event. ?This place really owed us one after almost winning the
Super DIRTcar race here,? said McDonald after the win. ?We had it
clearly won and like tonight we were gone after every restart. The car
failed and we ended up in a big pileup.
?It feels
great to win one here, I?ve won a lot here in a modified and now I can
say I won one in a sprint.? McDonald walked away with $2,000 for winning
the SUNY Canton sponsored feature event and he tied atop the Riverside
Bar and Grill weekend points with Lance Yonge earning each driver an extra
$300. McDonald and Jeff Cook started on the front row of the feature with
McDonald getting the jump on Cook into turn one. He was able to slide
up in front of Cook for the lead.
By lap five,
McDonald caught the tail of the field on the big half-mile speedway. As
a result, Cook was able to track him down and pull even with him into
turn three. As they raced into turn one, McDonald went under Doug Emery
while Cook tried to go to the outside. Emery and Cook got together sending
Cook?s No.10 flipping off the top of the speedway in turn two. He was
uninjured in the accident. ?I knew he (Cook) was going to be quick,?
said McDonald. ?I?ve passed a lot of lapped cars and there are places
where you can pass them and places where you can?t. I could see him
(Cook) coming and when I got under Emery he checked up and Jeff (Cook)
got into him.?
Mike Stelter and Michael Parent came together on the same lap in turn
four with Parent?s night being ended as well. McDonald was able to take
the lead again when racing resumed as he brought the field slowly to the
green flag giving him a jump on the field. Very quickly he pulled away
from the rest of the competition and found himself battling in slower
traffic. He carefully and patiently worked the high and low sides of the
speedway to put cars between himself and the field. McDonald experienced
his only trouble of the race on lap 22 when the front nose wing on the
car broke and flopped up on his hood.
This changed the car and worried the Cornwall, Ont. driver that his chase
for his first win might end. ?When that flopped over (wing) I was thinking
here we go again,? laughed McDonald. ?I had to let off on the backstretch
because the car kept wanting to wheelie a little bit. I figured since
I couldn?t get by the lapped cars at that point that no one else could
either.? Tommy Wickham, of Constantia, N.Y., finished second in the
feature which was a one position improvement over where he finished the
last time the Empire Super Sprints visited the ultra-fast speedway. ?We?ve
had a few bad weeks lately and to finish second tonight feels pretty good,?
stated Wickham. ?We ran well the last time we were here and we adjusted
the setup a little bit tonight to make the car better.? ?Brian (McDonald)
was in a league of his own out in front, it would have been tough to get
by him even if I could have got close enough to challenge him.?
Yonge, of Penn Yan, N.Y., finished second the last time and this time
out came to the checkered flag in third. A nice end to the weekend for
the driver of a H.G. Performance powered Maxim. ?I was pushing Tommy
(Wickham) there a little bit at the end of the race,? commented Yonge.
?I could stay with him but the track was so fast that the only way I
was going to be able to pass him is if he made a mistake. He never did
that.? Tim Kelly, of Rock Stream, N.Y., had crossed the line in second
in his Avenger chassis No.12. He was docked two spots for going below
the cone on the lap six restart. Chuck Hebing, of Ontario, N.Y., finished
fifth in his first ever race at the facility.
SERIES CHAMPION: By entering the event, Steve Poirier captured
his second consecutive Empire Super Sprint championship. The St. Mathieu
de Beloeil, Que., driver has had a stellar season with ten wins and with
three races left to tie Mal Lane?s record of 11 wins in a season. ?Our
goal at the beginning of the season was to come out and defend our championship,?
stated Poirier. ?I didn?t know we were going to have such a good year.
Having ten wins in a season is a super year and hopefully we can get a
couple more here at the end of the season in the bigger races.?

Also
on the night's card, Nathan Delormier of Akwesasne picked the
right night to finish 1st as he not only earned himself a trip to the
Mohawk Bingo Palace Victory Lane but picked up a hefty $600.00 check besides.
Billy Woodward,
Jr. driving Trevor Arquette’s #7x and Mike Allen started on the front
row of the Jacobs Excavation / Sparky’s Electric sponsored event with
Woodward getting the early lead followed by Allen, Delormier, Preston
Mossow and Dick Planty who came out of retirement for the event. Allen
continued to work Woodward for the top spot and on lap #4 in turn #2 was
finally able to get by and grab the lead. Allen continued to open up a
sizeable lead and looked like he would be tough to catch until the halfway
mark when the unthinkable happened and Allen’s motor let go coming into
turn #2.
Nathan Delormier
inherited the lead on the lap #13 restart followed now by Mike White,
Preston Mossow, Mike Benedict and Dick Planty. Delormier wasn’t holding
back for anyone and opened up a sizeable lead on the field. Dick Planty
was on the move in his #3 and the veteran was able to catch a couple of
breaks along the way with both Mossow and Benedict running into problems
in the closing laps of the race. But with each passing lap, Delormier
would open even more of a lead on Planty with not enough laps left for
the veteran to catch Delormier for the top spot as Nathan cruised home
to victory. Dick Planty picked up second with Mike White, Kevin Clement
and Preston Mossow, who got back out of the pits and made a great effort
to get back into the top five at the end.
In the first
running of the Bandit International Challenge Cup, it was Eugene Tarbell
getting behind the wheel of his daughter Claudia’s famed #7D and picked
up his biggest win to date in a 4-cylinder Bandit car and a paycheck of
$400.00.
Tarbell and
invader Mark Radbourne started on the front row with Tarbell grabbing
the early lead followed quickly by Joey Foster, Scott Mere, Radbourne
and Rick Finch. At the halfway mark, Tarbell opened up a sizeable lead
on the field with both Foster and Radbourne trying at every turn of the
wheel to catch the speedy #7D, but it was just too much to ask for as
Tarbell took home the win and the 1st Running of the Bandit International
Challenge Cup. Joey Foster finished second with Mark Radbourne, Mike Pecore
and Dudes Thompson rounding out the top five.
In the Empire
Super Sprints, local star Brian McDonald of Cornwall, Ontario picked up
an exciting victory, his first in an Empire Super Sprint.

Lucas Oil and SMAC Magazine Titles to be Decided.
SYRACUSE,
N.Y. – Time for the champions to be crowned! The final full point
weekend on the 25th Anniversary Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprint tour will
be held this weekend. Autodrome Edelweiss Speedway and the Mohawk International
Raceway will be the sites on Friday and Saturday in what will be Riverside
Bar and Grill Racing Weekend III.
Not only will
both events pay $2,000 to win, but a special $1,000 weekend point fund
will be divided among the top five in points which is open to all competitors.
If one driver can complete the weekend sweep, as much as $4,500 could
be pocketed.
While the
weekend is the battle, the winner of the war which started way back in
April at the Black Rock Speedway will be decided. The overall Lucas Oil
Champion and the SMAC Magazine Canadian Invasion titlist will be crowned
when the checkered flag is waved in Hogansburg, N.Y.
Northwood
2 Construction/Lasalle Motorsports brings you the A-Main at Edelweiss

will also be crowned.
The Lane’s
Yamaha Hard Charger points and also the Gater News Lap Leaders point will

Coming into
the weekend…Quebec’s Steve Poirier is leading all five point
groups and is looking to make history by being the first ever to make
a clean sweep of the points. The overall, Canadian and lap leader titles
could very well be clinched on Friday night for the driver who already
has nine victories so far in 2008.
But, the stars
and cars will be out in force this weekend…Lance Yonge, Alain Bergeron,
Justin Barger, Michael Parent, Jeff Cook, Tim Kelly, Brian McDonald, Tommy

JOHN LAZORE
WINS RACE OF CHAMPIONS SYRACUSE QUALIFIER AT MOHAWK INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY
August
30, 2008 - John Lazore of Akwesasne
had a lot to celebrate this past Saturday night as he took home a victory
in the “Race of Champions” 50 lap Syracuse qualifier, $2,000.00 in
prize money, picked up a guaranteed starting spot for Syracuse in October
and the 2008 Coors Light DIRTcar 358 Modified Track Championship.
Two former
track champions Dave Heaslip and Jeff Sykes started on the front row of
the Discount Cigarettes sponsored event with Sykes taking the early lead
but it was short lived as “The Ole Master” himself Heaslip came storming
back on the outside and grabbed the lead coming off turn #4 in lap #6
followed closely by Sykes, Danny Johnson, Billy Cook and Simon Perreault.
Heaslip hung tough in the top spot for the first half of the race while
behind him things were getting quite interesting. Danny Johnson, making
a rare appearance at the speedway, was able to get by Sykes for second
and now set his sights on Heaslip for the top spot. By the time Johnson
took over the second spot, Heaslip had already opened up a sizeable lead
on Johnson and began to increase it with each passing lap.
On lap #23,
Johnson fell victim to a right rear flat tire and headed pit side for
a change. Simon Perreault, who was having the race of his career, moved
into second followed by John Lazore, Jeff Sykes and Casey Swamp.
The long time
veteran and Hall of Famer looked unstoppable in the #1 but on lap #41
the unthinkable happened as Heaslip goat a flat tire going into turn #2.
John Lazore who had just passed Jeff Sykes for second now found himself
sitting in the top spot and a shot at a trip to the Mohawk Bingo Palace
Victory Lane. Lazore was now determined to take home the victory more
than ever and immediately put plenty of room between him and Sykes for
the top spot. Jeff could not make up the distance and Lazore cruised home
for a big victory. Jeff Sykes settled for second with Dave Heaslip, Casey
Swamp and Danny Johnson rounding out the top five.
In the Action
Race Parts UMP/DIRT Pro Stocks, it was Stephane Lebrun picking up the
win and his first ever Pro Stock Track Championship at Mohawk International
Raceway.
Ricky Thompson
and Lebrun started on the front row with Thompson grabbing the early lead
followed by Lebrun, Dave Papineau, Jody Swamp and Erick Varin. Thompson
continued to hold off Lebrun and the rest of the field at the halfway
mark but not by much as everybody was still nose to tail at that point
setting up what could be an exciting finish. But on lap #15 with just
five laps remaining, Thompson picked up a flat tire sending him to the
pits putting Lebrun in the top spot.
On the restart
of the race, Lebrun took off and put plenty of distance between he and
second place runner Dave Papineau and took home the big win. Dave Papineau
had a tremendous season and finished second on this night with Jody Swamp,
Roger Levesque and Ricky Thompson rounding out the top five.
In the Pecore
Performance and Transmissions Semi Pros, Kevin Fetterly, Jr. continues
to have a great ending to his season as the Massena, NY native picked
up another victory.
Mike Allen
and Harvey Arquette, Jr. battled for the top spot for the first half of
the race until an incident at the halfway mark put both cars starting
from the back of thepack. This put Fetterly who was running third at the
time up front. The next five laps saw Fetterly hold off Jay Montour and
then hold off Brent Kelsey in the final lap for the victory. Kelsey finished
an impressive second with Mike Allen, Nathan Delormier and Ryan Phillips
rounding out the top five.
In the Helm’s
Salvage and Trucking Bandits, it was Claudia Tarbell finishing out a banner
season in the division by picking up a victory and the 2008 Track Championship.
Tarbell took the lead from early race lead Scott Mere and then held off
a late race charge by Eli Gilbert for the win. Gilbert picked up a second
with Scott Mere, Jeb Beeson and Dudes Thompson rounding out the top five.
During the
celebration in the Mohawk Bingo Palace and Class II Casino Victory Lane,
Tarbell told track announcer Jamie Davis that she would be moving up to
the Pro Stock Division in 2009.
In the Bash
Brothers Motorsports Enduros, Kevin Thompson capped off a very successful
season by picking up a win and the track championship for 2008. Thompson
who started third on the grid quickly grabbed the lead at the drop of
the green and avoided a number of incidents to bring home the win. “The
Rock” Rock Niles picked up second with Cory Helm, Bennett White and
Wayne Jock rounding out the top five.

2008 - FRENCHMAN CLAIR HEADS MR. DIRTcar 358-MOIDIED REVIVAL AT M.I.R.
JOHN LAZORE
WINS WOLFCLAN TRUCKSTOP 25 AT MOHWK INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY
August
16, 2008 - John Lazore picked up
a major victory in his quest for the Coors Light DIRTcar 358 Modified
Championship for 2008 this past Saturday night at Mohawk International
Raceway by winning the 21st running of the Wolfclan Truckstop 25.
Billy Cook
and Clayton Benedict started on the front row with Benedict grabbing the
lead followed by Cook, Delbert LeGrow, John Lazore and Mitchell Jock.
Both Mitchell Jock and John Lazore were on the move early and by lap #7
Lazore got by LeGrow and began challenging Benedict for the top spot but
Clayton held tough and the rookie sent a message to John that taking 1st
place away from him wasn’t going to be easy. On lap #11, Lazore made
a slick move and got by Benedict for the top spot.
At the halfway
mark, it was Lazore on top with Clayton Benedict, Delbert LeGrow, Mitchell
Jock and Jeff Marshall rounding out the top five. In lap #13, Mitchell
Jock started to make his move again, first by picking off Delbert LeGrow
for third and then getting by Clayton Benedict for second. Earlier in
the race, right at the start, Carey Terrance was involved in an incident
that took him out of the race. This made the out come of the race for
both Lazore and Jock all that much more important. By the time Jock had
got to second, Lazore had already built up a sizeable lead and even though
the rookie made great effort catching him, he just did not have enough
laps left to do it as Lazore made a crucial trip to the Mohawk Bingo Palace
Victory Lane. The two top Rookies had a great night with Mitchell Jock
finishing second and Clayton Benedict finishing third. Jeff Marshall and
Delbert LeGrow rounded out the top five.
In the UMP/DIRT
Pro Stocks, Louie Jackson returned to the Speedway and picked up a big
win to keep him in the top ten in points.
Jackson, who
has been limited from racing on Saturday night because of his business,
which is Action Race Parts, had to first get by a very determined Allen
Peters who led for the first sixteen laps of the 20 lap event. Peters
who needed a good finish to have any shot at the 2008 Track Championship
and a win would definitely put him in to contention as both Jody Swamp
and Stephane Lebrun, who are first and second in points, were struggling
in the race. Jackson began to make his charge from his fifth starting
spot in lap #4 and after a bout with both Dave Papineau and Travis Back,
found himself right on the back bumper of Peters.
On lap #17,
“Mr. Outside” made his move on the high side of turns 1 and 2 and
got by Peters for the top spot. Allen tried everything he could to get
back on top but Jackson’s car handled great through the turns and Louie
cruised home to victory. Peters settled for second but it still kept him
alive for the point chase. Travis Back finished third with Dion Oakes
and Ricky Thompson rounding out the top five.
In the Pecore
Performance and Transmissions Semi Pros, second generation driver Kevin
Fetterly, Jr. found his way to the Mohawk Bingo Palace Victory Lane finally
after many tries.
Fetterly started
on the outside of the front row with Kevin Clement on the inside. Kevin
grabbed the lead quickly with Stuart Mossow close behind. The two battled
fiercely for the top spot with Mossow challenging Fetterly with every
turn of the wheel. But Kevin held tough and went on to score a much sough
after and much desired win. Stuart Mossow ran a great race to finish second.
Brent Kelsey had his best run of the season with an impressive third place
finish. Jay Montour returned to the speedway and finished fourth with
the consistent Ryan Phillips finishing fifth.
In the Helm’s
Salvage and Trucking Bandits, Eli Gilbert is sending a message to his
competitors that he is a force to be reckoned with in the Bandit Division.
Gilbert who
started fifth on the grid took the lead from early race leader popular
Claudia Tarbell and continued on for the big victory. Tarbell settled
for second but never the less it was just like winning as she inches closer
to the coveted 2008 Track Championship as rival Joey Foster ran into problems
earlier in the race that put him pit side for the balance of the event.
Dudes Thompson, Kyle Bjork and Randy Blanchard rounded out the top five.
In the Bash
Brothers Motorsports Enduros, it was Kevin Thompson right at the finish
line squeaking by Josh Jock for the win. TJ Herne, Rock Niles and Konkie
Lazore rounded out the top five.
JEFF MARSHALL
TAKES DIRTCAR 358 MODIFIED EVENT AT MOHAWK INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY
Saturday, Augut 9, 2008 -
Jeff Marshall of Fort Covington, NY sent a message to the rest of his
competitors in the Coors Light DIRTcar 358 Modified Division at Mohawk
International Raceway that he is not about to lay down and go away quietly
in the 2008 points chase as the speedster picked up his 4th win of the
season with a victory in the 14th running of the Village Engraver 25.
Clayton Benedict
and Delbert LeGrow started on the front row with Delbert grabbing the
early lead followed closely by Benedict, John Lazore, Tom Jock, Jr. and
Jeff Marshall. After eight laps of racing, LeGrow was still leading when
the caution came out for the M70 of Billy Cook whose car had slowed on
the backstretch.
On the restart
Marshall, who had been running fourth, jumped up two spots by the time
the field had reached turn #2 and was right on the back bumper of the
popular driver LeGrow and began to challenge him for the top spot. At
the halfway mark, it was Delbert LeGrow on top with Jeff Marshall close
behind. Running in third was Carey Terrance who had worked his way into
the top three from his 6th starting spot and began to mount an attack
on both LeGrow and Marshall. Clayton Benedict held tough for fourth with
John Lazore holding down the fifth spot. Marshall kept the pressure on
and finally on lap #20 was able to slip by LeGrow for the top spot. Both
John Lazore and Carey Terrance were able to get by Delbert by lap #22
but by that time Marshall had built up a sizeable lead and tried as they
may, could not get to Jeff in time as Marshall cruised home the winner
and earned himself a trip to the Mohawk Bingo Palace and Casino Victory
Lane. John Lazore finished second with Carey Terrance picking up third.
Delbert LeGrow finished fourth with rookie Clayton Benedict picking up
the #5 spot.
In the Action
Race Parts UMP/DIRT Pro Stocks, it was Massena, NY’s Allen Peters picking
up a key point’s victory.
Ricky Thompson
and Billy Woodward, Jr. started on the front row with Woodward taking
the lead followed by Stephane Lebrun, Thompson, David Papineau and Travis
Back. The second generation driver Woodward held tough and at the halfway
mark, still had the lead even though Dave Papineau, who had moved into
the #2 spot, was right on the back bumper of the #49 and not about to
let Woodward out of his sight. In the meantime, Allen Peters had mounted
a serious charge up through the pack and was now challenging Papineau
for second. On lap #12, Peters not only got by Papineau but by the time
they came out of turn #2, was able to get by Woodward for the top spot.
On lap #19, the unthinkable happens to Woodward. On a restart, as Billy
stepped on the gas coming out of turn four, the right rear wheel broke
off sending Woodward right around in front of oncoming Dave Papineau collecting
him in the process. This now put Jody Swamp and Stephane Lebrun right
on the back bumper of the #88 of Peters setting up a one lap dash to the
end. But the steady Allen Peters was not about to give in and came home
the victor. Jody Swamp finished second with Stephane Lebrun, newcomer
Eric Varin and Dave Papineau rounding out the top five.
In the Pecore
Performance and Transmissions Semi Pros, it was Mike Allen picking up
the win but it didn’t come easy as he had to do it from the back of
the pack.
Ryan Phillips
and Kevin Clement started up front but after one lap, it was Stuart Mossow
getting the early lead. Mossow only was able to hold the lead for two
laps before Harvey Arquette, Jr. came a calling and got the lead on lap
#3. For many they thought the race was over but as Harvey came out of
turn #4, something broke on the front of the car sending the JR7 head-on
into the front stretch wall. Arquette emerged from the car apparently
ok but then later in the pits complained of a soar neck and having a headache
so he was taken to the hospital for observation. There was no further
report at press time on Arquette’s condition but hopefully he was ok.
Mike Allen
got by Stuart Mossow on lap #7 to take the lead and held of a late race
challenge by Kevin Fetterly, Jr. and Ryan Phillips to take the top spot.
Kevin Fetterly, Jr. finished second with Ryan Phillips, Nathan Delormier
and Trevor Arquette rounding out the top five.
In the Helm’s
Salvage and Trucking Bandit Division, the 4-cylinder speedsters put on
the best show of the night.
Gary Sharlow
in his newly acquired #7K grabbed the early lead only to have Joey Foster
take it away from him on lap #3 with Claudia Tarbell and Eli Gilbert quickly
moving into the #2 and #3 spots. The three cars eventually found there
way into traffic and as they started to lap cars, it became increasingly
difficult to maintain position as Claudia Tarbell found out the hard way
getting tangled up with a couple of other cars sending her to the very
back. In the meantime, both Foster and Gilbert found a way clear with
Foster winning the battle and taking the victory. Eli Gilbert picked up
second with Mark Radbourne, Fred Weaver and Dudes Thompson rounding out
the top five.
In the 20
lap Slic Track Enduro special, it was Konkie Lazore picking up a long
awaited victory in the Bash Brothers Motorsports sponsored division but
it didn’t come easy.
Lazore who
started 14th in the field not only had to take his time working his way
up through the pack but just barely avoided a couple of incidents along
the way. Wayne Jock finished second with TJ Herne finishing third.
Lucas Oil
Canadian DIRT Challenge… 4 nights of action in a row!
Cornwall,
On – July 29, 2008 - Martin B?langer –
A really busy weekend awaits the best modified drivers of Quebec, Ontario
and the Northeast of the United-States when the Lucas Oil Canadian DIRT
Series will hit 4 tracks in 4 nights in a row. The series will visit Mohawk
International Raceway, Autodrome Edelweiss, Brockville Ontario Speedway
and Cornwall Motor Speedway.
The Mohawk
International Raceway, a track 5/8 mile wide located at Hogansburg, New
York will be the first stop on Thursday, July 31. The speedway was added
to the series during wintertime and could be the most important race of
all, because many drivers never raced there. Local drivers such as Carey
Terrance, John Lazore, Roy Tarbell, Mitch Jock and Jeff Marshall will
be the ones to watch during the 100-lap feature event sponsored by Chiefs
Tobacco.
The series
then goes to Edelweiss Speedway on Friday, August 1st. Last year, 38 modifieds
were in the pits and Laurent Ladouceur won that race to set the pace for
his championship title. Les Toitures Marcel Raymond is the proud sponsor
for the race who will also be 100 laps.
After a quick
stop in Quebec, the series travels to the Brockville Ontario Speedway
on 730 Truck Stop night. A new track layout will be on display for the
drivers as it been widen to a 3/8-mile track during the off-season. The
larger curves will also permits more passing. Pat O’Brien put on
a clinic as he won the race in 2007 after starting 25th of the grid.
The weekend
will end on Sunday, August 3 at Cornwall Motor Speedway; Goodyear will
present the 100-lap feature race. The winner will get 3,000$ for his win
but will also receive a new modified chassis courtesy of Express Gas.
Pat O’Brien won last year’s event.
Each race pays
a cool $3,000 and time trials are scheduled to start at 6: 30pm at each
track. A point’s fund of $6,250 is also on the line.
One race is
already in the books as David H?bert won the feature at Autodrome Drummond
on July 19, Clement Therrien and Kayle Robidoux completed the podium.
A fine field of 40 drivers made the haul for that event. H?bert leads
the point`s race with 106 points, Therrien is second with 101, Robidoux
comes in third with 100, Mario Clair and Alain Boisvert completes the
top 5 with 93 and 86 points respectively.
The initial
race schedule at Autodrome Granby on Friday, July 18 has been postponed
to Friday August 15. For a second year in a row, the champion will be
crowned at Granby.
We encourage
race fans to visit their local track, as the best drivers will be in town
to compete for this coveted title! More than 35 cars are expected everywhere!
Rolling
Wheels ‘Fast Track’ Fits Pro Stock Series Points Leader Jackson
Weedsport,
NY – July 1, 2008 – By Tom Skibinski , DIRTcar
Racing NorthEast PR Director
The
spacious 5/8-mile clay oval at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park has been tabbed
the ‘Fast Track’ for its long straightaways and wide sweeping
turns that lend themselves to some of the highest speeds around the entire
DIRTcar Racing NorthEast circuit
Over the past
two seasons, no full-fender racer has been consistently faster at Rolling
Wheels in the UMP Pro Stock ranks than 11-year veteran Louie Jackson.
“I definitely
like the speed, when the track dries out and gets slick my car is at its
best,” said Jackson, 39, who has finished no worse than second in
the past three tour events held at Rolling Wheels, including his first
career victory in Elbridge last September. “Unless there’s
a lot of rain and it turns into a mud hole, I feel pretty confident coming
back.”
Opening the
2008 Mr. DIRTcar Championship Series with a win at Can-Am Motorsports
Park in April, early season points leader Jackson is the pre-race favorite
to take another checkered flag at Rolling Wheels when tour competition
resumes for round two on Thursday, July 3. His only other triumph in ’08
came in the season-opener at Mohawk Int’l Raceway in May.
“This
is obviously the best start I’ve had in the Series but the rain
has really hurt a lot, I’m looking forward to another tour show
with drier conditions,” noted Jackson, who began racing Duke Stocks
at Cornwall (Ont.) Motor Speedway and Mohawk in 1998 and captured the
2000 Cornwall crown before moving up in class the following year. The
Hogansburg, New York pilot copped his only Pro Stock track title as a
rookie teamed with Joey Ladouceur in 2001 at MIR before taking on the
challenging Mr. DIRTcar Championship trail the past five seasons. “I
thought I’d have a few more wins by now but the tracks have really
been wet and its too early in the year to start wrecking equipment. So
far I’ve been pretty much just riding around, finishing races and
staying clean.”
While his garage
harbors a handful of Dan Pogo-prepared engines, Jackson has just one car
at his disposal although a back-up mount is currently under construction.
His familiar no. 18 Native Cigarettes-Action Auto Parts-C&B Enterprises
Chevrolet Monte Carlo/Stinger will be the main focus of attention by his
peers as he looks to improve on his Series win total of four posted during
the past four seasons.
“My biggest
goal is to sit where Pete (Stefanski) was last year,” said Jackson
, referring to the head table that all Mr. DIRTcar Champions help fill
during the season-ending DIRTcar NorthEast ‘Night of Champions’
awards banquet held in November. Jipp Ortiz was named Mr. DIRTcar in 2005
and Jackson purchased two winning cars and both motors from the second-generation
racer and has finished third in the past two tour championships. “But
whatever happens the most important part is still having fun.”
“Winning
a couple more Series races would be nice, too. Maybe at Orange County
or Genesee , that’s Pete’s hometrack so it’s even more
special. Before I used to be scared of slippery tracks, now I think they’re
to my advantage. I’ve got a great engine program and have learned
how to change to the right shocks and springs, so we’re ready to
go every time out. Now I’m able to take my time and be patient knowing
the car will come in for me later on when a lot of other guys start to
fade,” Jackson added.
Expected to
be in the hunt challenging Jackson for the coveted overall title throughout
the upcoming campaign is two-time defending Mr. DIRTcar Champion Stefanski
and fellow frontrunners Allen Peters, Don Barnes and Ladouceur. Peters
secured runner-up Mr. DIRTcar honors in ’07, Western New Yorker
Barnes settled for fifth while ’04 Mr. DIRTcar Champion Ladouceur
placed 16th following a limited schedule. In the Can-Am lid-lifter, Stefanski
was scored third, Ladouceur 8th and Barnes 16th while Peters failed to
start the main.
“I like
the schedule this year, last season was a little light on races but its
close to perfect again,” figured Jackson, sole owner of Action Auto
Parts, who has earned 27 DIRTcar Pro Stock victories to stand tied for
16th all-time. He currently ranks fifth on the UMP points chart for the
New York State/Canada Region and is listed 42nd in the national UMP standings.
Along with following the entire 13-race Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Series,
he plans to run Cornwall (4th in pts) weekly and occasionally hit shows
closer to home at Mohawk. “I’d like to run more but my business
is really busy on Saturday and that’s a day I usually have to work.
So when I do get to the track, that’s my time to have some fun.”
Racing at Rolling
Wheels gets underway Thursday at 7 p.m. with grandstand admission beginning

Bold Move Pays Dividends For Poirier:
Claims ESS Victory at Mohawk International Raceway
By MIKE MALLETT
HOGANSBURG, N.Y - Less than a year ago Steve Poirier lost a race
in the closing laps because he was too cautious in slower traffic. He
vowed to never let that happen again.
On Saturday night, June 7 at the Mohawk International Raceway, Poirier
threw caution to the wind and made a bold move to score the victory in
the 25th Anniversary Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprint SUNY Canton 25-lap
A-Main
"Sometimes you have a good night and everything goes your way," stated
Poirier. "We had a good starting spot and then when Lance (Yonge) had
to slow up I was there to make the pass.
"It was a move that could have ended up with me on my roof but I had to
take the chance."
For the defending series champion, the win earned him $2,000 and his first
tour win of the racing season and the tenth of his career.
Racing started with Lance Yonge and Tommy Wickham leading the field to
the green. As the field raced off of turn two for the first time, Justin
Barger got sideways and ended up getting his No.32 upside down bringing
out a red flag.
On the restart, Yonge took the lead with Wickham and Poirier falling in
line behind him. The three remained in that running order when the caution
came out for the second and final time on lap 10 as Anthony Cain spun
in turn four.
When action resumed, Yonge held the top spot while Poirier applied pressure
to Wickham for second. On lap 17, Wickham bobbled and Poirier drove by
to the inside to take the position away.
Now in second, Poirier began closing in on Yonge as he caught the tail
of the field. Then, on lap 22, Yonge slowed up and left a lane open on
the bottom allowing Poirier to sneak his AMB powered J&J Auto Racing
chassis by for the lead and ultimately the victory.
"It's easier to be the guy in second in that situation," said
Poirier. "I have the choice to pick which lane I want to go to. If the
leader picks a good lane I can follow him and if he picks the wrong lane
you can choose the other one.
"He (Yonge) left me just enough room on the bottom and I decided not to
lift. It could have ended very differently but it worked out."
For the second consecutive race, Yonge, of Penn Yan, N.Y., scored a runner-up
finish in the final run down.
"I don't know what it is but I'm having problems with my wings," commented
Yonge about the nose wing on his Maxim. "I broke the brackets off just
after half way. The car changed and I couldn't roll through the corners
like I wanted to.
"If the wing didn't break I wouldn't have had to slow up in the slower
traffic."
Coming home in third was Tommy Wickham. Wickham, of Constantia, N.Y, closed
briefly on Yonge when he was in the runner-up position but a bobble in
turn four cost him second and a chance at the win.
"The car felt really good tonight, the best its felt all year,"
said the 21-year-old of his J&J Auto Racing mount. "I thought I had
something for Lance (Yonge) but I got into a rut on the outside off turn
four and that allowed Poirier to pass me.
"I'm happy though, we finally had a good run."
Alain Bergeron, of St. Pie, Que, started sixth and finished fourth with
his Don Ott powered ride. Perry Francis, of Akwesasne, N.Y., finished
in fifth in his first ever Sprint Car start piloting a back-up Poirier
car.
Empire
Super Sprint/Mohawk International Raceway Notes: Making first ever
ESS starts were local hero in Francis, who impressed all with a stout
fifth place finish and that was despite a broken front wing and left rear
shock, and former Oswego Speedway super modified regular Andy Noto - Chris
Jones also made his first ESS start of 2008 - Brandon Warner destroyed
his sprinter during the second heat when he climbed a wheel and flipped
down the front stretch. Unfortunately, he was ESS's first flip victim
of the 25th Anniversary Tour?€?Next week it's the first of three
weekend visits to Autodromes Granby and Drummond, the events will be $2,000
to win and $450 to start - Also, the rained-out Earl Halaquist Memorial
is going to be made up on Tuesday. August 5th at the Fonda Speedway.
JEFF MARSHALL
WINS FIRST EVER DIRTcar 358 MODIFIED FEATURE AT MOHAWK INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY
Saturday, June 7 2008 - Jeff Marshall of Fort
Covington, NY picked up a long awaited win in the Coors Light DIRTcar
358 Modifieds this past Saturday night at Mohawk International Raceway
in Hogansburg, NY by winning the 8th running of the Keegan's Tobacco 25
lap main event. "My father told me that it would take at least five years
before I would get my first feature win,"? said Marshall, "This is year
number six!"?
Both Marshall and Delbert LeGrow started on the front row of the event
with Jeff grabbing the early lead followed by LeGrow, Clayton Benedict,
Mitchell Jock and Roy Tarbell. By lap #10, Marshall had a full straightaway
lead on LeGrow and the rest of the field and by the halfway mark, had
already started lapping slower cars. Meanwhile behind Marshall, the battle
was on as Roy Tarbell was on the move along with John Lazore and Carey
Terrance. Tarbell had worked his way up to third and began to work on
LeGrow for the #2 spot. Delbert was not about to give up the 2nd spot
quietly as the two battled for four laps before Tarbell finally got by
in lap #17.
In Lap #21 the last thing Jeff Marshall wanted to see happened and that
was a caution flag came out as John Lazore exited the #1 turn after striking
the front stretch wall. This put Tarbell right on the back bumper of Marshall
on the restart.
When the green was displayed again, Marshall jumped out into the lead
with Tarbell close behind followed by Carey Terrance who had quietly worked
himself into the top three. With two laps to go, both Tarbell and Terrance
battled fiercely for the #2 spot and at the same time, closed the gap
on Marshall, but Jeff was just too good in the corners and he continued
on for his first ever Coors Light DIRTcar 358 Modified victory a trip
to the Mohawk Bingo Palace Victory Lane. Roy Tarbell held off Carey Terrance
for Second with Terrance taking the #3 spot. Delbert LeGrow had yet another
great showing and finished fourth with rookie driver Clayton Benedict
rounding out the top five.
In the Action Race Parts UMP/DIRT Pro Stocks Division, Jody Swamp of Akwesasne
picked up his first victory of the season.
Travis Back started on the pole with Gatineau, Quebec's Stephane Lebrun
along side. At the drop of the green, Back took the lead with Lebrun close
behind but in lap #3, Back went into turn #2 and exited the race track
bringing out the caution.
On the restart Swamp who had worked his way up from his 6th starting spot
on the restart started along side Lebrun and when the green flag waved
Swamp took the lead with Lebrun close behind. Stephane tried everything
he could to get by Swamp for the top spot but in the end Jody prevailed
and picked up the trip to the Mohawk Bingo Palace Victory Lane. Stephane
Lebrun finished second with Dion Oakes, Morgan David and Billy Woodward,
Jr. rounding out the top five.
